Loury Lag: an explorer connected to the pole with Advanced Tracking

Advanced Tracking x Arctic Mission

Loury Lag

Following his numerous expeditions, Loury Lag is embarking on a new adventure: Arctic Mission. A true surpassing of oneself for this crossing of the North-West from the West over 3500 km in ski kite and in solo.

This expedition of up to 120 days, in temperatures as low as -70°, is a new challenge for Loury Lag and one in which Advanced Tracking is proud to participate.

In order to ensure the communication and security of Loury Lag, Advanced Tracking accompanies him by providing him with adapted tools and communication time.

He will be equipped with an Iridium Go and an Iridium 9555 satellite phone, compatible with the extreme conditions in which Loury will operate.

The compact and rugged Iridium GO will allow him to communicate via the Iridium satellite network to send and receive emails, send SMS, get weather files and his GPS location and activate backups.

Since smartphones are not designed for such conditions, Loury will also be equipped with the rugged and compact Iridium 9555 satellite phone to access all the features of a conventional phone via the satellite network.

With these 2 equipments, he has the insurance to be able to communicate whatever happens knowing that the autonomy of these devices is 16h in standby and 7h in communication for the Iridium GO and 30h in standby and 4h in conversation for the phone. The communications will be limited but possible as soon as he needs it. Loury can count on the support of Advanced Tracking and Iridium products to communicate by satellite with his teams, and on our new backup service Focus Point in case of emergency!

We wish him to beat this double world record in ski-kiting and look forward to discovering the images and testimonies of his expedition to the North Pole.

SITUATION AS OF MARCH 30

Loury Lag Arctic Mission

Loury is still having great difficulties to progress. 100 km after his last refueling in Tuktoyaktuk, his 12m2 sail which allows him to progress in light winds has torn in a pack field. Loury had 2 sails at his departure but the 4m2 only allows him to progress in strong winds. We can't send him a new sail for at least 10 days. Obviously, he can't wait that long on the ice pack, he doesn't have enough food. So he has to progress by ski touring to reach the next supply point. Impossible to keep the course that we had fixed ourselves, Loury must cut by the ground. He has to pull his pulka of more than 100 kilos in fresh snow of 40cm. According to him, this is "clearly the most physically demanding moment since the beginning of the expedition".

His average speed is very slow, sometimes 1km/h. To do 15 km in a day, he has to make 15 hours of efforts. He is obliged to ration himself to have enough food until the next village, which he should reach tomorrow if he stops to sleep only a few hours tonight.
